Heart of England Cattle Championships to start at Kenilworth Show
Coventry and Warwickshire’s largest one-day agricultural show will play host to the first round in a tournament to name the Midlands’ top cattle farmer.
The Heart of England Cattle Championships will take place across three agricultural shows in the region – with the competition getting underway at the Kenilworth Show on Saturday, June 8.
It will then move from Warwickshire to Leicestershire for the Blaston Show before the competition finale at the Blakesley Show in Northamptonshire.
Cattle exhibitors will have the opportunity to accumulate points in the hope of winning the title throughout each of the shows.
The points are gained by the number of cattle exhibited and their class placements at each event, with the final results and prize giving taking place at the Blakesley Show.
The winner from each show will receive sash and rosettes, with the overall competition victor securing a cash prize and the Perpetual Rix Trophy – which is held for one year.
The Kenilworth Show, which is organised by the Kenilworth and District Agricultural Society, will again be held on the showgrounds opposite Stoneleigh Park.
Charlie Weetman, Director of the Kenilworth Show, said: “We are looking forward to hosting the first leg of the inaugural Heart of England Cattle Competition – as we endeavour to find the best competitor from across the wider region.
“As a trio of shows we hope this will encourage more exhibitors to enter their cattle in the competition.
“We attracted more than 12,000 people last year and are hoping to build on that success with our 76th annual show.”
Blaston Show, which will be the second leg of the competition, will be held at the Blaston Showground just outside Slawston on Sunday, June 30.
Hilary Manners, Press Officer at Blaston Show, said: “It's a great family day out, attracting bigger crowds year on year.
“The Show’s Trustees have been able to give away well in excess of £20,000 to local charities from money raised at the show - in 2019 we will be raising money for Wishes4Kids.
“We are delighted to be a part of this new Heart of England Cattle Championships, and look forward to seeing strong entries in this year’s cattle classes.”
The Blakesley Show takes place on Saturday, August 3 at Blakesley Heath Farm.
Simon Penn, Chairman of Blakesley Show, added: “We are very pleased to be the third and final leg of the new Heart of England Cattle Championship welcoming new and existing competitors to the 135th Blakesley Show, where the Rix Trophy will be presented during the Grand Parade in the main ring.
“We hope that this will grow year-on-year for all three shows and look forward to welcoming many more visitors to our family day out, which includes many other events and competitions.”
Advance tickets for the Kenilworth Show cost £12.50 and are available from www.kenilworthshow.co.uk
Tickets can also be purchased from Kenilworth Library and Farmers Fayre at Stoneleigh Park.
Gates open at 9am on Saturday, June 8 and a free shuttle bus will run from Kenilworth Clock Tower to the show throughout the day.
